Affected by the epidemic: more than 1/2 of Asia-Europe routes cancelled

Published by February 21,2020

Since the beginning of this year, the coronavirus has dealt a heavy blow to China, a global manufacturing center, and more than half of the carrier's flights from Asia to Northern Europe have been cancelled.

Alphaliner analyst statistics show that in the past four weeks, 33 of the world's largest container ship tradelane have been cancelled, which means that 46% of scheduled departures on this route have been cancelled.

In addition, carrier schedules and customer announcements seen by Alphaliner indicate that 17 more voyages will be cancelled in the next four weeks. It is expected that the capacity reduction will reach about 700,000 TEUs within 8 weeks from the beginning of the Spring Festival, which is far more severe than the 340,000 TEUs in the same period after the Spring Festival last year.

Decreased capacity on other routes has also weakened the global supply chain. Alphaliner estimates that the Asia-Mediterranean route will reach approximately 290,000 TEUs, while 680,000 TEUs will be removed from trans-Pacific routes.
