At the time of the incident, the multi-purpose vessel was sailing from Cagliari, Italy, to Alicante, Spain, with 12 crew members on board.

Later on Saturday, the Coast Guard immediately dispatched ships and helicopters to the scene. However, rescue operations were hampered by low visibility and bad weather.

The next day, a Coast Guard helicopter successfully evacuated Cdry Blue's crew. No casualties were reported.
