Strike in Port Felixstowe cancelled on December 27, 28

Published by December 30,2019

Workers in the Port of Felixstowe, UK, cancelled strikes originally scheduled for December 27 and 28.

The union union is currently negotiating to address its concerns over Felixstowe's plan to shift some engineering work to outside companies to cut costs.

The strike was planned by more than 110 engineers hired by Felixstowe Terminal and Railway Company, who voted for the strike and received 98% support.

In the UK's busiest container port, Unite has about 1,900 members, including 116 engineers. Currently, only tire assembly operations are facing a shift, but Unite is concerned that this may be the beginning of an unpopular trend.

Britain and Ireland's largest union union announced on December 18 that it will also begin voting on the remaining 1,800 members of the terminal to decide what action to take. Voting will end on January 14.

"If this outsourcing proposal involving GM tires is implemented, we are only seeing the tip of the iceberg," Unite regional official Neal Evans said. "We believe that this will lead to significant cuts in future pay and working conditions." This is completely unacceptable. of.

"The point of the dispute is that our engineers believe that the identity of the employer is a condition of their employment contract and they do not want this to be changed unilaterally.

"The other members of our 1800 members are also increasingly worried that they may be the next to face this situation. That's why we need to vote further on these members to support industrial action, including strikes. The port has agreed to delay the deal with the tire company until January next year to discuss alternatives
