Sri Lanka announces new port plan in Colombo

Published by February 26,2020

SLPA stated that it will focus on developing container transshipment in the Port of Colombo. It has signed an agreement with AECOM, a comprehensive infrastructure services company, to conduct a feasibility study on the development of Colombo's northern port to expand the country's cargo handling. ability.

According to SLPA, as the current port is located in the city's commercial district, finding a location for container transshipment and logistics development in Colombo has been a challenge.

The proposed North Port of Colombo may extend from the Kranj River in the Modara area to the existing breakwater north of the Port of Colombo. SLPA intends to use the proposed ports for liquid bulk, dry bulk, ro-ro ships and containers.

The current container throughput of the Port of Colombo is 12 million TEU per year. SLPA is seeking a long-term plan for the next 30 years to increase the container throughput of the port to about 35 million TEU.

SLPA hopes that in addition to expanding the domestic shipping and logistics market, Colombo North Port will also help Sri Lanka become a major trading point in the Indian Ocean.
