J.B. Hunt, a U.S.-based intermodal carrier, is becoming the latest logistics company to venture into the ocean shipping business, launching continuous shipping services between China and ports in California and the Pacific Northwest.

Service on two general cargo vessels will be launched this month as part of a long-term multi-vessel service agreement between Arkansas-based J.B. Hunt and Singapore-based Swire Shipping.

Under the agreement, J.B. Hunt will have ongoing freight opportunities from China's Shenzhen, Qingdao and Shanghai markets to ports in California and the Pacific Northwest. In announcing the new service, the company said it would provide customers with unique solutions to speed up international shipments of goods from Asia, while also helping to expedite overseas shipments of the new company's containers.

Ongoing services will help customers alleviate supply chain challenges such as equipment misplacement and liquidity, dwell time and demurrage by streamlining ocean freight and transshipment processes, they said.

During the past two years of COVID-19 and shipping congestion, some retailers and shipping companies have adopted similar strategies, although most have been limited in scope and duration.
