What is MSDS?

Published by December 05,2019

The full name of MSDS is Material Safety Data Sheet, which is used by chemical manufacturers and importers to clarify the physical and chemical characteristics of chemicals (such as pH value, flash point, flammability, reactivity, etc.) and the health of users (such as carcinogenic, Malformation, etc.). In European countries, MSDS is also known as Safety Data Sheet (SDS). However, the United States, Canada, Australia, and many Asian countries use MSDS terminology.

MSDS is a comprehensive legal document on chemical characteristics provided by chemical production or sales enterprises to customers in accordance with legal requirements. It provides sixteen items, including physical and chemical parameters of chemicals, explosion performance, health hazards, safe use and storage, spill disposal, first aid measures, and related laws and regulations.

MSDS outlines the hazards of a chemical to human health and the environment and provides information on how to safely handle, store, and use the chemical. As a service provided to users, manufacturers should provide safety instructions to users along with chemical products, so that users understand the hazards of chemicals, take the initiative to protect them during use, and play a role in reducing occupational hazards and preventing chemical accidents. At present, developed countries such as the United States, Japan, and the European Union have generally established and implemented MSDS systems, requiring manufacturers of hazardous chemicals to provide a safety statement for the product when they sell, transport, or export their products.

Regardless of domestic or international trade, the seller must provide product explanatory legal documents. Since the legal documents of chemical management and trade are different in each country and even in each state in the United States, and some of them are changed every month, if the MSDS provided is incorrect or the information is incomplete, it will face legal liability. Therefore, the quality of the MSDS is an important indicator of a company's strength, image and management level.
